Justinmind in MobX

Are you spending a bunch of hours designing interactions and usable interfaces for the smallest of the screens they are out there?? (yes, mobile devices) then MobX Conference in Berlin, Germany, is for you.

We highly recommend to follow/attend this event, specially the workshop scheduled on Thursday November 17th about Prototyping Mobile Experiences, and, obviously don´t miss the killer presentation by Dan Saffer, a crowd favorite, although the whole line-up of speakers is really cool.

We believe that initiatives likes this one are a great way to get together a group of privileges minds that know how to put into words what we go through on a daily basis, as developers, UX experts or designers. That´s why we decided to support it and are proud to announce that Justinmind is one of its sponsors.

All the workshops will take place on Thursday November 17th, and the Conference will be the following day, on Friday. It all will take place on a beautiful venue: an old Berlin Theatre called Heimathafen Neukölln.

If you are not attending, you can follow it on twitter: #mobx

Justinmind Prototyper helps overcoming the empty canvas fear

So there you are, in front of your computer/blank paper/napkin (??) Whatever you use to start mocking up a project. You have lots of instructions from your client, millions of ideas in your head, a timeline, a dateline, a budget, and, in front of you, a canvas… still empty.

Combining all the above factors is not easy, where should I start? Well… are you a hands on kind of developer? Then start creating with a prototype, like Justinmind Prototyper.

Have a blank canvas no more! The cool thing about a prototyping tool is that you can start filling up the empty screen right the way.
Let´s say you are developing a web app. Go to the components gallery and start drawing wireframes, basic stuff such form fields, menus, etc. You just have to drag and drop. You can even generate a specification document with notes and comments. Then start simulating: animations, events, actions, conditions and any kind of behavior rules, even with data. Export your design as an image in your documents or generate a HTML if you want it to be interactive.

Now, stop, take a deep breath, and get a feel of the flow, function and interaction of your creation. Ok, you find some bugs. No biggie. Correct them, with Justinmind Prototyper you can change anything in a matter o seconds, remember, even though it looks SO real, there is no coding, corrections are made in a snap

Now you have it, your prototype, on time, on budget. Ready for your client´s review. What happens next? That´s another story, or, in our case, a follow-up post.

Justinmind Prototyper widget library

When designing and developing a mobile app the concept of “how it looks” is specially relevant. We have to work in a very limited space, and that little space we have must be used in an efficient manner. The small screen is a challenge, and it emphasizes even more the necessity of prototyping to simulate the size of your user interface and the overall feeling of the application in terms of how people will interact with it.

Whether it is aimed to developers or to a company, the best outcome for all involved is to use a prototype that behaves and looks the closest possible to the final product. Mobile apps in particular should be uncomplicated, visually attractive and cool. The prototype should also be that way. This is why to be able to access an extensive components / widget library is crucial, and even more if the library has attach actions to its components. Are you designing an iphone app? Check out this prototype made by our Prototyper and you´ll see what we are talking about.

Save the URL to your home screen in your iPhone and you’ll get the full experience of simulating a real app.

You can create a prototype that looks and feels like the application would. It´s much easier to get an idea of how is going to work when the prototype is designed in the right context, with tool bar buttons, menu items, etc, that look the same as those from an actual iphone, and….there is with a big plus: they can be incorporated using a simple drag and drop. You can also be extra cool by creating your own widgets or components. You just store them for future use. Well, now that you get the idea you can download them at Extras and try them for yourself. (you need to have Justinmind Prototyper installed to use them). Select File-Import-Widget Library in your prototype and select the downloaded library.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Justinmind 4.4.1: Bug fixes

Hi folks,

There has been two weeks since we launched 4.4 version and the first bugs arose. We are sorry for that but we already fixed some of them so here’s the new 4.4.1 version just for you. These are the bugs that are fixed with this version:

  • Sometimes if you left empty values in an expression the prototype won’t work well when you export to HTML files
  • The ‘on mouse leave’ event didn’t work correctly in the exported HTML
  • The application crashed every time you push the ‘Don’t show again’ check box in the welcome window
  • The publish online button changed the path where the project is and each save was saving in a wrong location.
  • The ‘recent files’ weren’t working in the welcome window
  • The option ‘add to my widgets’ wasn’t creating the icon (Mac only).
  • The creation of custom widgets by drag and drop wasn’t working (Mac only)
  • The default value for the ‘line heigh’ property in rich texts was 0 (zero)

Thanks for all of you who reported that bugs. We keep working to fix other things, develop new features and make the tool even easier to use.

Justinmind 4.4: Pixel Perfect and Publish Online

This new enhanced version of our wireframe tool
is more powerful and easy-to-use than ever.
Try it
now for FREE.

Here are some of the new features:

Line height in rich text: this was a recurring user request so we did our best to implement it as soon as we could. With Justinmind Prototyper 4.4 you can define the exact line height in the rich text widget. The height is defined in pixels so now you can be as accurate as you want to in your designs. We fixed the export to HTML and Usernote and now the texts matches pixel per pixel to the ones you see in Prototyper’s simulation. No more cut and distorted texts in your Usernote, give it a try!

Bulleted list: This feature is very common in other editing software. Now you have it in Prototyper too. This option is included in the rich text widget so that you can set one rich text as a bulleted list. That way each paragraph in the rich text will be preceded by a bullet. Find this option both in the tool bar and in the properties panel.

The real publish online: Wouldn’t be great if you could upload your prototypes to your Usernote account just with one click inside Prototyper? Wait no more! Now you can add your Usernote account to Prototyper and publish your prototypes with just one click! You must try it, you’ll see how handy it is.

Comments system:
Usernote has been updated too. We changed the comments system a little thanks to the feedback gathered from Usernote users and we applied some usability improvements. Take a look and tell us what you think about them. If you already have some prototypes published and you want to have the new comment system in those prototypes you need to publish the prototypes again.

Killing bugs: We have an obsession about bugs so we spent a lot of time fixing them. This version is even more stable and bug free than the last one.

We hope you’ll make the most of all these new features as we keep working to make Prototyper more powerful yet easy-to-use. Try it now!

Testimonials

“Justinmind Prototyper is far and away the best wireframe/prototyping tool in the market today. It is not only very easy to use but handles very complex cases. It has helped us at Oracle drive product development to convey concepts for building next generation software applications.”
Sean K Frogner, Director Product Managment, Oracle
“Our software development has entirely changed ever since we discovered JIM. Our prototypes made using JIM look and feel a hundred percent like the end product. All involved parties know beforehand what to expect in terms of functionalities and color scheme. Concerning the learning curve of JIM, our users are quickly becoming proficient with a minimum amount of effort. All they have to do is just watch the video tutorials posted on the justinmind website and off they go. The support team of JIM is also quite responsive whenever we run in a hurdle. They have so far reacted with a straight to the point answer and they sometimes send a sample project to help us out.”
Thomas Musabyimana Magegera, Software Analyst and Developer, Delta Lloyd Bank
“Justinmind is one of the best software tools on the market today. The ROI is almost instantaneously. We had been creating things “by hand” so to speak – meaning we would have to create html code for all of our prototypes one page at a time. JIM does it automatically. At one push of the button – the html code is written, the css files are written and everything is very organized. Quite frankly, it is one of the best pieces of software that we have seen in years. I would recommend JIM to any organization that is working toward the development of prototypes. Some of the industries I think could use the JIM tools include Aerospace, Real Estate, Construction and Computer Hard and Software. What would normally take us 12 hours to do, we have been able to accomplish in less than an hour. “
Doug Monahan, Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Mobilezapp USA, Inc.
“Justinmind Prototyper allows me to visualize a website for clients before quoting them. Not only does it allow me to give more accurate quotes by fully planning out websites as compared to just making outlines on paper but my clients feel more comfortable as they have an actual interactive prototype site where they can see how their production site will work and behave. The use of this tool has definitely increased my closing ratio with clients and I recommend it to any web designer!”
Taras Hryniw, President, Walton Street Web Design
“I found the support guys incredibly helpful and friendly, they always did their best to find a solution to all the problems and questions we threw at them.”
Ailsa Berkeley, Webdesign Team Lead, Globoforce
“Justinmind saved us an enormous amount of time on a recent project for a major movie studio. We skipped our old wire-framing process completely and went directly to cut & paste mock-ups from existing assets. It also vastly simplified the commenting process, no more piecing together feedback from multiple emails.”
Russell Stewart, Director of Product Development, Innovations Lab, Sony DADC
“I am responsible for demonstrating how our highly configurable SaaS solution can meet the specific use case requirements of our prospective clients. JIM allows me the ability to quickly ”mock up” my understanding of their use case and collaborate with my project sponsor without having to create a lot of demo data noise in my demonstration system. Once we agree that I am directionally correct in JIM, I configure my demo to reflect the agreed upon scenario. By creating a “happy path” prototype with animated navigation queues, I allow my prospect sponsor to use the prototype internally to educate their peers on our capabilities prior to the actual system demonstration without the concern that they will wander around in the software. JIM has saved time, enhanced prospect involvement in design, eliminated unnecessary demo data propagation, and ultimately provided a mechanism to ensure buyer/seller accountability throughout the proof phase of the sales cycle.”
Jay Raulerson, Business Solution Consultant, Aravo Solutions, Inc.
“I have been amazed at how accurately I can produce website prototypes. Whether from my own designs or from a professional graphic artist I have been able to build pixel perfect, functioning prototypes that leave my audience believing that the application is already complete and ready for production. I’m sold! More importantly the VP of our Business Technology department is sold too.”
Nicholas Dongarra, Project Manager/Business Analyst BTS, Total Administrative Services Corporation (TASC)
The Fox School of Business, Temple University’s Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) has adopted Justinmind as an integral part of its revised Bachelor of Business in MIS curriculum. According to Munir Mandviwalla, Associate Professor and Chair, the revised curriculum emphasizes digital entrepreneurship and innovation and “the Justinmind prototyping tool is a perfect addition to our new digital design and innovation course where students will learn how to change and innovate business processes.”According to Mandviwalla “we particularly like the storyboarding metaphor of Justinmind which allows our students to focus on the idea and quickly create highly functional prototypes that target the web and smartphones.”
Munir Mandviwalla, Associate Professor and Executive Director, Temple University
“Prototyping within our company was a luxury that only our designers possessed before Justinmind was introduced. Justinmind with its ease of use has allowed pretty much anyone within our company the ability to visualize and create stunning working prototypes for any platform quickly. Not only has Justinmind reduced our costs significantly per product but has most importantly allowed us to take on more projects because of the time saved getting products out the door.”
Eric Bernal, Chief Technology Officer, CML Media Corp.
“Justinmind is a fantastic tool that can be learned and used within a couple of hours to build user interfaces and specifications. The real time collaboration feature across distributed teams is very effective and efficient. This tool is very intuitive and powerful for business users to communicate the requirements succinctly.”
Anil Jwalanna, Chief Technology Officer, iCharts, Inc.
“Justinmind Prototyper allows us to add interactivity to our software development proposals. Our potential users get to see and interact with the ideas that they’ve conveyed to us and it helps us to communicate our vision for the software to an increasingly visually-oriented audience.”
Marc Adler, Vice President of Application Development, IT Solutions Consulting, Inc.
“Jusinmind Prototyper allowed me to build my entire site requirement documentation dynamically. It saved me weeks of documentation time and saved countless hours of programming by being able to show my engineers and designers exactly what I wanted with a dynamic tool instead of static drawings and text.”
Kevin Bauer, VP of Marketing, Alchemy Solutions
“I did fairly deep analysis of the wire framing tools before we purchased this one. For our needs which included interactive rapid prototyping, this fit the bill far and above everything else I tested. There are other, more expensive tools out there that do roughly the same thing but I found them bloated and not anywhere near as easy to ramp up on as quickly as I ramped up on Just In Mind. It’s a really good tool for the money and keeps improving.”
Anthony Hall, Director, User Experience, Bill.com
“One of the most intuitive and easy to use prototyping software out there. The learning curve to get up and running is shorter than almost all of the competitive tools out there.”
Mike Newman, VP Digital Media Services, Bubble Up
“For me, the value of Justinmind isn’t that it helps me build a single prototype quickly. The real value comes in being able to generate endless alternatives aimed at solving a single problem. With other tools, building your second, third, and fourth prototype often requires starting from scratch. That’s not the case with Justinmind.”
Abel Allison, Interaction Designer, Meebo Inc.
“We have been using Justinmind at Cvent to complement our requirements documentation. Being able to create quick dynamic prototypes to demonstrate our ideas across various departments has really streamlined our process. Our analysts are thrilled they have a new tool (toy) to use to help them design new interfaces for our products. Thanks Justinmind!”
Theresa Kraemer, Certified Usability Analyst (CUA) Manager, User Experience, Cvent
“I have used other products that are many times more expensive, but not nearly as feature rich or user friendly as Justinmind Prototyper. I especially find the ability to publish and conduct user testing with my customers extremely powerful and invaluable.”
Ludwing Najera, Senior User Experience Architect, LudByDesign
“JustinMind lets us spend more time designing sites and less time creating deliverables. It helps us quickly prototype and share complex ideas with clients and with Usernote we can manage client feedback realtime. JustiinMind’s familiar interface allows us to conceptualize and wireframe sites modularly then produce full page trees of wireframes quickly. It is well suited for demonstrating both complex interactions and data driven content. Justinmind helps us work faster and look better.”
Marc Infield, Principal and Director of Interactive, Infield Design
“Before Justinmind we would spend weeks drawing pictures with narratives trying to identify what the end business users wanted. Now we prototype it live with them and produce the supporting documentation in a fraction of the time. Justinmind has saved us months of effort on every project and is an indispensable tool in our development arsenal.”
Robert Clark, President, INSolve, Inc.
“Justinmind prototyper actually saved my project. My web developers I hired to build our new auction web site were slacking and 2 months went b without them creating even a single wire frame. I decided to take matters into my own hands, and with having never made a wireframe before I found justinmind and was able to create custom elegant wireframes within 2 days that blew my web developers out of the water and honestly got everyone energized to complete the project! You can view the wireframes I made with the prototype program at www.RealBay.net, I will be using their services every time!”
Stephan Pierce, CEO, RealBay.com and RealBay LLC.
“With Justinmind Prototyper I can easily mock up screens and get a sense for how it actually feels to interact with and navigate through my designs. I am able to test and improve my designs earlier and more often then ever before, which results in stronger designs and happier clients.”
Mo Goltz, Interaction Design Planner, SGolth.com
“Justinmind is intuitive, very easy to use and collaborate. First our company used the trial for evaluation, soon we were convinced by the solution and decided to buy it. We recommend it to our network. Thanks to Justinmind.”
Véronique Couturier, Vice-présidente, directrice de la création, Pardeux
“Justinmind Prototyper has changed the way we approach applications completely. After using it for less than a year, the corporation will not develop any applications without first creating a Proof of Concept using Justinmind Prototyper. This method of application development allows us to get user acceptance and by-in prior to developing the application and gives the developer sufficient documentation to reduce the development cycle.”
Bob Fletcher, Special Projects Consultant, GS1 Canada Inc.
“Justinmind is so easy to use and so intuitive. In less than an hour, I was able to build my first prototype. I am very pleased with the product and the customer support.”
Andrée Laforge, Product manager, Syntell
“Justinmind has really helped me present not only small, but also large design ideas to my team, allowing for design iterations quickly and easily saving time on actually coding in the long run. Such a great tool at expressing ideas and explaining concepts to test before development. Really proves the importance of user testing!”
Annabelle McGee, Sydney Australia
“We design iPhone apps for a lot of companies including large corporations like Samsung and Pfizer. Justinmind was a godsend for us. We were searching for a good prototype tool and justinmind has the simplicity and elegance you would normally associate with a massive product like Microsoft Word. Well done guys – polished, elegant and useful.”
Anthony Gherghetta, General Manager, Applabs, The Click Agency
“I find JustinMind very elaborated and in comparison to other wireframes very hands down superior. With no other tool you build a realistic prototype so quick as with Justinmind. It’s intuitive and easy to learn. The results are easy to publish and discuss worldwide with no other application as your browser. Besides – if you have any trouble – the support is fantastic.”
Roland Wiegmann, Owner, 4you-solutions
“Our client had a very positive reaction when they saw they were able to participate in visually defining their applications.”
Leander Härter, Customer Relations Manager, Audi
“Justinmind proved to be the right tool for the right job. Thanks to it, we could easily communicate to our clients the scope of what they were asking for as well as providing a frame for discussion.
Not only it is a great communication tool but it is also an invaluable aid for documentation, providing to our functional specifications the visuals needed for interpretation into the technical design”
David Waelder, Global Rollout Manager IS for Europe, Boehringer Ingelheim

“Justinmind is a fantastic tool that can be learned and used within a couple of hours to build user interfaces and specifications. This tool is very intuitive and powerful for business users to communicate the requirements succinctly”
Deepak Dave, Sr. Software Business Analysts, Boehringer Ingelheim
“Justinmind is great! Because of Justinmind we can respond within a week to new development iterations. By directly going to wireframings, and testing that wireframe by publishing it on our server, we can collect responses directly from our customers, live or by their own.”
Ibrahim Turan, Owner, iShopLocal
“Justinmind is a great tool for building proptotyes, and is proving to be an invaluable part of our specification process. It has helped me identify issues within a project before it gets to the build stage. Justinmind is a powerful, yet very user friendly tool.”
Denise Hine, Operations Manager, Silkmoth Ltd.
“I used JustinMind to build a user interface that I integrated in my specifications. This tool helped me doing this job quickly and it was easy to use it again to make improvements.”

Justinmind Prototyper makes it easy to quickly create working prototypes far beyond simple mockups while supporting reuse of widgets and components.”
Marco Zietzling, Software Engineer & Business Analyst, BMPI
“Justinmind helped me to make the link business/development and make it easy!. Justinmind allow my customers to figure out and experience the app at the beginning, from definition stage. What is more, the technical team can use the prototype as a reference in the development process.”
Patricia Casar Solares, Business Process Management, Veureka
“Prototyper has enabled us to define crystal clear marketing and user interface requirements in different mobile application prototypes. The easy to use, built-in mobile templates and design flexibility, has greatly improved our communication between marketing, design and development teams as well as reduce time to market for mobile applications.”
Tomás Brezmes, M2M Domain Coordinator, Orange Labs R&D
“Justinmind allows us to experiment and better specify the new features and projects that our company develops. Our internal functional analysts team is now able to build real ‘proofs of concept’ which we discuss interactively with customers and users in order to reach the desired implementation without writing a single line of code, so finally, the customer gets exactly the features he expected. Before knowing about Justinmind, our functional analysis team was limited to build static mockups: A very simple and limited way of presenting to users the implementation of a software project. In addition, by developing wireframes with Justinmind, we have also improved the way we document the projects internally for the development team.”
Alex Monso, Product Manager, Vision Robotics

Testimonial: anyone can use Prototyper!

Who is Prototyper made for? It’s only made for Banks? Big Corporations? UX maybe? Web or Mobile developers? Well, all of them, for sure, but take a look at this testimonial and you will see that anyone can take advantage of this amazing software prototyping tool:

“One of my hobbies is gaming. I play a game in which the characters can wear virtual hats. Some of these virtual hats are quite rare and valuable-selling for hundreds of dollars. This game has become more than a passing hobby during the past six months; I have been able to use this game to help real people.

After the tsunami struck Japan in March, I organized and led a charity drive utilizing this online economy. We took donations of virtual hats and then sold the virtual hats to raise money for tsunami disaster relief. We raised nearly $5,000 for the Red Cross using this method. I enjoyed running this fundraiser but it was very labor intensive. My team and I spent hundreds of hours collecting and cataloguing donations of virtual hats, verifying monetary donations to the Red Cross, selling and auctioning virtual hats, distributing virtual hats to buyers and auction winners, etc.

I want to create a website that does all of this automatically. Though the above description is an extreme oversimplification of what I am imagining, I have spoken to several more technically inclined individuals and they have confirmed that my plans are feasible. However, I am not a coder so it’s very difficult for me to illustrate the website design and functionality in an effective manner. I need to create a prototype to realistically demonstrate the project goals in order to recruit talented volunteer coders and designers. Until then, my ideas will remain just in my mind. I’m sure that JustInMind Prototyper will assist me in turning these ideas into reality.”
